Science

Vision Statement

“The world is full of wonders, but they become more wonderful, not less wonderful when science looks at them.” - Sir David Attenborough. We aim to remain curious when looking at living things, natural environments and the everyday, developing an understanding of ‘why?’.

Seek explanations for observations and test theories to inform appreciation of natural phenomena.

Establish a secure scientific vocabulary which can be used to describe and communicate their findings. Apply our knowledge to promote protection and encourage the responsible conservation of our planet.

Intent Statement

At Hornsea Burton and Skipsea Federation, our intent is to build a Science curriculum which allows pupils to be fully immersed in every aspect of Science and for them to recognise the importance of Science in daily life. We ensure the teaching and learning of Science has the importance and prominence it deserves by delivering a well-rounded, engaging curriculum. The scientific areas of learning are concerned with increasing pupils' knowledge, understanding of the world and with developing skills associated with Science as a process of inquiry. It will develop the natural curiosity of the child, encourage respect for living organisms and the physical environment, and provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence. Science is encouraged to be hands on, investigative and fun.

The aims of science are:

  • To develop scientific vocabulary in a meaningful way that is enjoyable and accessible to all pupils

  • To provide children with a balanced and broadly-based science curriculum which is underpinned by Global Citizenship, Wellbeing and Aspirational values; and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences in later life

  • To stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about science in the wider world and making it meaningful

  • To support Maths and English through investigating and presenting scientific enquiry so that children know more, remember more and understand more.
