MFL
Vision Statement
At Skipsea Primary School we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between the foreign language and English. Their learning of a foreign language extends their skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing and phonics. Learning another language raises awareness of our multi-lingual and multi-cultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and that of others.
Intent Statement
MFL prepares children to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are often carried out in languages other than English. Increased capability in the use of MFL promotes initiative, confidence and independent learning and encourages diversity within society.
The intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We hope to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing in ways that are accessible to all children. We aim to build the children’s ‘culture capital’ so that they are aware of similarities and differences between different cultures.
These are the essential characteristics of linguists that we want our pupils to achieve during their time at our school:
• The confidence to speak with good intonation and pronunciation.
• Fluency in reading.
• Fluency and imagination in writing.
• The confidence to listen and understand a foreign language
• Knowledge and understanding of the phonics in a foreign language
• A strong awareness of the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
• A passion for languages and a commitment to the subject.
• The ability to use language creatively and spontaneously.
